The Stupid Doctor

Unsatisfied Patient:        All doctors are very stupid.

Doctor:                          I agree. To continue in the medical profession when one has to deal with patients like you is stupidity.

The OT Dress

One problem encountered by Junior Resident (JR) doctors is what clothes to wear while on-call duty in night.
If the doctor wears formal clothes, they are uncomfortable while the JR is resting or sleeping in between calls. The dress’s crease and get-up also gets spoilt.
If they wear informal clothes such as track-suits or pajamas, then they have to either change to formal clothes wasting time or go in informal clothes to attend call looking unprofessional. Wearing informal dress has a negative impact on the patient’s and their relative’s perception regarding the doctor’s professional’s competence.
There is also the problem of spilled blood or other body fluids spoiling the resident’s expensive clothes while attending patients.
Another frequent problem is regarding attending calls in emergency rooms. Even in a stable patient with no immediate urgency, the relatives want the patient to be seen immediately by the on-call doctor. They pester the emergency room doctors to call the on-call doctor immediately. The relatives frequently get angry and create scene if the doctor do not come instantaneously.
Dr. Dev (fictional name) has noticed that for JRs from surgical branches, there is lots of advantage in changing to OT (Operation Theater) dress, while on night duty in the hospital,
The OT dress is both comfortable and looks professional at same time.
There is also no worry regarding spilled blood or other body fluids spoiling your expensive clothes. If such a mishap occurs, just change to another pair of OT dress and let the hospital laundry worry about getting the stains out of the clothes.
An additional benefit of attending emergency call in OT dress, is that the emergency room doctor can give the excuse, that the on-call doctor is doing a life-saving operation and will come as soon as free. When the on-call doctor comes in OT dress, this gets confirmed, soothing the patient’s and relatives temper.
A word of precaution. OT dress once worn out of OT becomes as good or as bad as normal street clothes in term of OT wear. Therefore, never actually go into OT while wearing OT dress worn in non-OT area of hospital. Change to fresh set of OT clothes before going into OT.

Merskey’s Rules

  1. Do a silly test, and you get a silly answer.
  2. In the hospital, more deaths occur in bed than out of bed, so get the patient out of bed!
  3. Any drug can do anything!
