Five junior residents had appeared for the Master of
Surgery (MS) examination in orthopaedics department, in a prestigious Medical
Institute at New Delhi. The result was to be announced by Monday, along with
that of the other departments by the academic section.
Eager to known the result early, the residents met the
head of the department (HOD) of orthopaedics. They requested him to let them
known the result in advance. He replied cryptically, ‘whatever the result is,
it is hundred percent.’
The residents were very happy. They
thought it is impossible that they will fail all five of them. Therefore the
result must be that all five must have passed.
To celebrate the occasion, they decided to organise a
party for the entire department on Saturday evening. The party was a grand
success and all the faculty members including the HOD attended it. All
congratulated them on their performance in exam.
Monday morning came. The result was
put on the notice board. All five had failed in the examination.
There is an age old advice, don’t
count your chicken before they are hatched. This is applicable today also. Do
not assume that you have done well in an interview that you will be selected.
Do not assume that your contract will be automatically renewed because you have
provided smooth service. Till you get the assurance in writing, don’t break
open the champagne. People have been known to be fickle and unpredictable.
Therefore, be patient will awaiting any result. Keep
all your hopes in your heart and your lips sealed till the result is not
officially declared.
