The Fast Shave

For busy professionals, doctors, and even students who need to shave almost daily, the skill to shave fast can save lots of invaluable time. If you shave at least five times a week, it will be approximately 250 times a year. If you take 30 minutes per shave you will be spending 7,500 minutes or 125 hours shaving in a year. If you reduce your daily shaving time to approx five minutes, the yearly total time spent shaving will be 1,250 minutes or less than 21 hours, which is a saving of 104 hours.

Here are some tips by which I reduced my shaving time to almost 5 minutes from 30 minutes earlier.

First of all, don’t try to achieve a super close shave as seen in shaving product advertisements. You will take more time and will end up with more irritated skin. A reasonably close shave should be the goal.

Use warm water to soak the beard area a few minutes before actual shaving. This will soften the beard hairs and make the blades glide more easily on the skin and reduce skin irritation. Some splash warm water, some keep a towel soaked in hot water over the beard area. Some shave after taking a warm shower or bath. You can do some other activities while waiting for the warm water to do its work before shaving.

Use the best possible blades, especially the three-blade or five-blade shaving blades. There will be less chances of skin irritation and you will be able to shave fast as you will be less worried about skin cuts with them.

Change the blades frequently. Use the sharpest possible blades. Reason: same as above.

Although a shaving gel or cream may be more lubricating and moisturizing than shaving foam, the foam has the advantage of being very fast to apply. To save time, preformed shaving foam is the best.

Shave in long strokes covering large areas in one go rather than using multiple short strokes.

Identify and divide the areas of your face as normal areas, tricky areas, and dangerous areas.

In the normal area, such as the side of your face, there is less chance of skin cuts or damage, and easy to achieve a close shave. Use long fast strokes here.

In tricky areas, such as over your chin, you may have to use many careful strokes to achieve a close shave.

In dangerous areas, such as near the lips and under the surface of the chin, you may end up with cuts or skin damage if you are not careful. So be careful here even if it takes more time.

Rinse your blades with water after each stroke. Some men leave the tap open while shaving to save time in frequent rinsing, but these waste lots of water. A fast and environmentally friendly option is to keep a mug with warm water while shaving. Just rinse the blades in this mug after each stroke.

Hopefully, following these points will turn you into Usain Bolt of the shaving world.
