The Head Scratch

Some of us develop some mannerism or unconscious action which even we may not be aware of. Students in a Government Medical College in Rajasthan had noted that if the Head of Department (HOD) of Pediatrics, scratches his bald head while taking the exam then it is a sure sign that he is going to fail you.

The HOD was taking the final year viva (oral exam) in the practical exams of the MBBS students. An external examiner from a different university was also taking the exam jointly with him. When the viva of one particularly weak student was going on the HOD raised his hand to scratch his bald head.

Seeing this, the student quick as lightning grabbed the HOD’s hand in mid-air, and implored, “Sir, don’t scratch your head!” The surprised HOD was speechless and tried to free his hand from the student. The student increased the force of his grip and again pleaded, “Sir, Please don’t scratch your head.” The external examiner looked in wonder at the student and demanded the reason for this strange behavior.

The student explained, “If he scratches his head then I am surely going to fail. Please stop him from scratching his head.” The external examiner placated the student and asked him to release the HOD’s hand and go outside. Reluctantly the student compiled.

Unfortunately, although he prevented the HOD from scratching his head, yet he failed in that exam.

Don’t confuse the cause and effect. The poor performance of the students was the cause of their failure and not the scratching of the head. This scratching of the head was like a ‘poker tell’, a subconscious sign that the student is not answering the questions satisfactorily.
