Another incidence happened with Dr. Bhatia (Fictional Name). One day AIIMS, New Delhi was abuzz that Dr. Bhatia was caught stealing equipment from AIIMS. Such a thing appeared highly improbable for any faculty member of AIIMS, let alone a ‘royal’ person like Dr. Bhatia.
Dr. Dev (Fictional Name) was the Gent’s hostel secretary and Dr. Bhatia was the Hostel Superintendent at that time. When Dr. Dev met with Dr. Bhatia at the hostel advisory committee, the talk turned to the allegation of stealing by Dr. Bhatia.
Dr. Bhatia explained that he was invited to lots of medical conferences as a faculty member. His field of dermatology (skin diseases) being a visual oriented field, he had made and collected lots of photographic slides which he includes in his lectures to make them more informative and interesting.
Please Note: This was before the days of PowerPoint presentations and screen projectors. Nowadays the content of the computers is directly projected on the screen. In the good old days, the pictures were taken with an SLR camera using a special photographic film (slide film) which used to develop in positive. The films were developed, each frame was cut and pasted in a special cardboard frame and this was projected using slide-projector on a screen.
Since there were lots of photographic slides with him, Dr. Bhatia frequently needed a slide projector to sort the slides and practice his presentations and lectures. As a slide projector was not available in his department Dr. Bhatia decided to purchase one personally and kept it in his chamber in the department to practice and organize his presentations.
Once he wanted to practice the presentation at his home, he took the projector with him. On seeing him walking out of the AIIMS building with the projector in hand, the security guard at the exit gate accosted him. The security guard demanded to see the permission letter to take the projector out of the AIIMS building. Since it was his personal property, Dr. Bhatia had never thought of asking permission from the security in-charge to take the projector out of the building.
So, Dr. Bhatia was accused of ‘stealing’ his own slide-projector from AIIMS, New Delhi. When some of the more revolutionary types of students learned about the incidence, they spread the news like forest-fire in AIIMS.
If you are bringing your own personal property or equipment to your workplace make a record of it with your office authorities and the security department, otherwise like Dr. Bhatia, when you want to take it back, you may be accused of stealing your own property.
Also, after talking to Professor Bhatia, Dr. Dev came to know the complete story. Do not judge someone without hearing their side first. Things which at first glance may appear serious transgression may turn out be quite different when we see the complete picture.
