The Tea Server

Dr. Dev (Fictional Name) went to visit his friend Dr. Jolting (Fictional Name) after coming from Diwali vacation. While sitting in the ante-chamber of the Operation Theatre (OT), Dr. Jolting asked the hospital assistant who used to manage the Coffee Club in the OT to get two cups of tea for them.

He came with the two cups of tea after some. After placing the teacups in front of them, he bowed and said, “Sir, Diwali’s greetings.” and looked expectantly at Dr. Jolting. Dr. Jolting said, “Okay Okay, we will see later.” and got busy drinking the tea.

After the hospital assistant had left, Dr. Dev asked Dr. Jolting, “It looks like the hospital assistant was expecting some tip from you.” “Quite right,” confirmed Dr. Jolting. “In fact, I used to give him some money at every festival and special occasion, but have now stopped this practice.”

“Why?” enquired Dr. Dev.

“Even though I was the only person to give the hospital assistant some money as tips at every festival, I was highly disappointed by his service,” replied Dr. Jolting.

He continued, “You give someone tips as a mean to ensure better service. If I was sitting in a group and we all ordered tea, the hospital assistant used to serve the tea to my seniors first before me. If I am sitting with my equals then the hospital assistant served the tea according to the order for the tea was given. If I am not getting any preferential treatment, then why should I give some extra money as tips?”

If you get some benefit then be ready to give some extra service and vice versa. If someone is providing some extra service to you then be ready to give some extra payment or benefit in return.
